World Athletic Day was first observed in the year 1996 by the then president of The International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF)Primo Nebiolo. The main motto of organizing this Day was to inculcate a sporting culture amongst the youth by encouraging them to participate in various sporting events to create awareness on the importance of sports for physical and mental well-being.
Initially, the IAAF began encouraging the participation of children of the clubs associated with IAAF. Only to realize that schools were the best place to search for talent and catching them young will help to nurture, supervise and encourage them to become professional athletes.
IAAF’s headquarters in Monaco has set up a customized Athletics program at both educational and competitive levels for children between the ages 7 and 15 to fulfill their dream of active sports participation.IAAF has also announced special incentive schemes for sports teachers who are ready to commit their time to train and coach students outside school hours.
The IAAF has invited the governing bodies all over the world to include physical education; particularly athletics in their curriculum as athletics is the core for pursuing any other sporting activity. The IAAF is further striving hard to motivate youngsters to participate in different sports in pursuit of making the world more fitter and stronger.
The World Athletics Day 2021 will be celebrated on May 7, 2021. Even though there is no set theme for Athletics Day this year. The prime motto of participating in physical activities holds good even to this day as it helps to maintain your fitness levels.
The exponential rise in Covid -19 cases, has once again raised the questions on once physical and mental wellbeing and the need to have a strong immune system.
On this Athletics’s Day let’s reminisce the great athletes and vow to participate in sport and physical activity on daily basis to be fit.
