Athletes are involved in continuous physical activity throughout the day; be it a training session or an event, they are always on their feet. Hence it becomes even more critical for sportsmen to take care of their feet. An excellent therapy which can work wonders is the foot massage.

Ayurveda advocates that indulgence in continuous physical activity causes an imbalance in the kinetic component of the body –Vata, Padabhyanga – the foot massage can be an excellent daily regime before retiring at night to alleviate Vata. A soothing foot massage with warm oil (preferably sesame oil) and optimum pressure pacifies Vata thereby relieving stiffness, pain & numbness of the feet. On the other hand, it improves muscle strength making the feet stronger and enhances performance in sportsmen.

The feet are an abode of many nerve endings from various organs in the body. Foot massage relaxes the nerves of the entire body, acting as a promising sleep inducer. It reduces stress and anxiety by relaxing the mind, activates the immune system, and is an excellent way to wind up the day for athletes. It is a fantastic anti-fatigue therapy for restoring well-being.

Foot massage acts as a multi-vitamin with numerous benefits, from preventing dryness & roughness of feet, cracked heels, improves the clarity of vision, provides stability and strength. It also improves blood circulation, which ensures quick healing of wounds and highest energy levels throughout the day, providing an edge to sportsmen.

Reflexology believes similar principles that by applying the appropriate amount of pressure to the nerves in the foot, many ailments can be cured and energy blockages throughout the body can be released. Reflexology practices foot massage for pain relief and to relieve anxiety and depression.

Balanced and sturdy feet support the legs, spine and head forming a strong base; otherwise, our body will get distorted. Utmost care of feet is therefore an essential component for athletes.
